Explore the Wild Side of Cambodia’s Mighty Mekong
Join us for a full-day adventure to one of Cambodia’s most beautiful and untouched places. Travel from Stung Treng to Preah Rumkel and O’Svay, and explore the Ramsar Wetlands – a protected area full of birds, trees, and wildlife. This tour takes you hiking, kayaking, dolphin-watching, and even to the edge of Laos. It's a fun and peaceful way to enjoy nature and learn about life along the Mekong River.
Your local adventure begins with a warm pickup from your hotel in Stung Treng. Meet your friendly, English-speaking guide and set off across the Chinese-Cambodian Friendship Bridge, heading north on National Road 7 toward the remote Cambodia-Laos border.
Travel to Anlong Morokot and Begin Boat Journey
At Anlong Morokot (Vouen Kam), you’ll switch from van to boat, gliding upstream on the Mekong River toward the stunning Sopheakmet Waterfall—a mighty natural barrier that once blocked the ambitions of French colonizers. This powerful cascade marks the edge of Laos and offers an incredible photo opportunity.
Seasonal Tip:
In the dry season, we reach the waterfall by boat. During the wet season, water levels rise and we hike a short trail (~3 km round trip) through riverside forest paths to get there.
Explore Rock Zero & Dolphin Watching at Anlong Cheuteal
From the waterfall, continue to Rock Zero, a remarkable boulder marking the invisible line between Cambodia and Laos. Here, you'll visit Anlong Cheuteal Dolphin Pool, a deep, peaceful part of the Mekong known for its Irrawaddy dolphin sightings. These rare freshwater dolphins often appear at this spot—making it one of the best places in Cambodia to see them in the wild.
Optional Visit to Don Khone Island, Southern Laos
Time permitting, we’ll cross the river for a brief visit to Hang Khone, a quiet village on Don Khone Island in southern Laos, part of the famous 4,000 Islands (Si Phan Don). This area was once used by the French to transport goods via ferry and narrow-gauge railway—offering a unique historical insight.
Note: This stop is optional and dependent on available time and river conditions. No passport required for this short visit.
Traditional Khmer Lunch with a Local Family
Next, we return to the Cambodian side of the river and enjoy a delicious home-cooked Khmer meal at a local family’s house along the Mekong River. This is a chance to relax, try authentic food, and connect with the slow-paced riverside lifestyle.
Afternoon Kayaking Through Ramsar Wetlands
After lunch, we travel downstream by boat to O’Svay, where your kayaking adventure begins. Paddle gently through the tranquil flooded forests of the Ramsar Wetlands, a protected area rich in biodiversity.
You’ll kayak past giant trees with twisted roots submerged in water, and drift quietly through a landscape alive with birdsong. Keep an eye out for endangered bird species, colorful butterflies, and maybe even river otters. The area is accessible only by boat or kayak, making it a perfect escape into untouched Cambodian wilderness.
Photographer’s Note: This section is a dream for nature photographers and birdwatchers!
After a peaceful paddle, we return to O’Svay by boat, then transfer back to Stung Treng by van, arriving in the late afternoon with amazing memories and photos from a truly unique Mekong adventure.
